Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT)

Important Notice

Beginning February 7, 2022, entry-level drivers are subject to the requirements established under the Federal Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) regulations.

This applies to drivers seeking to:

  • Obtain a Class A or Class B CDL for the first time
  • Upgrade an existing CDL to a higher class
  • Obtain a School Bus (S), Passenger (P), or Hazardous Materials (H) endorsement for the first time

The ELDT regulations establish a Federal standard for CDL training applicants. Applicants must successfully complete the required ELDT training before they are permitted to:

  • Take the CDL Skills Test
  • Take the Hazardous Materials (H) Endorsement Knowledge Test

Drivers may search for an approved training provider through the FMCSA Training Provider Registry.

Program Details

Duration: Flexible

Training Hours: 20–60 Hours

Prerequisites: Existing CDL

Typical CDL Fees in Georgia Include:

  • Commercial Application (CAP): $35
  • Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP): $10
  • CDL License (Class A, B, or C): $32 (valid for 8 years)
  • Road Skills Test: $50 (if applicable)

Medical Requirements:

  • DOT physical exam: $75–$150
  • Drug screening (if required): $40–$60

Note: DMV fees are paid directly to the Georgia Department of Driver Services. DOT physical exams are paid directly to the certified medical examiner. Referrals can be provided upon request.
